There are places that have a certain magic, where any bad vibes are drained from you since you arrive. Little oases of peace and renewal.

Places like these are hard to find, my favorite one is Ensifera Camp -formerly known as Cotinga Camp-, near the city of Cusco. This small Eden is the result of the vision of conservation and diffusion of César Cusihuaman Caviedes and is located in the Mantanay ravine, in the Pukara sector in Yanahuara in the Urubamba district.

César -who studied business administration and culinary arts- initially intended​​ to have a private garden to engage in photography. This idea had been maturing throughout his working career in various hotels, restaurants and in the Peruvian rainforest. However, and fortunately for all of us, some friends convinced him to open this garden to the public.

The garden begins to take shape in March 2019 and, since César had stopped working, he began working on it with the intention of putting up a camping area, taking advantage of his parents’ land at the foot of the Mantanay private conservation area. The land had rustic platforms but it did not have flowers yet, so César, who has always lived in that area, explored the surroundings and began the work of reforesting and attracting as many species as possible to the nascent garden

The garden requires constant work and César has seen which plants have adapted best to the terrain throughout different seasons and all of them are native reforested species. For example, the garden has eight varieties of cantuta flower or Qantu now. To get as many flowers as possible growing in the garden, César takes advantage of the rainy season (November to March) to plant them.

The future that César has envisioned for the garden is shaping it to attract photographers and videographers, as well as to generate food for his family and neighbors. For the latter, he also grows in the garden and has started farming trout. To achieve these goals, he has left any (external) jobs to dedicate all his resources to the garden. He has also used his savings to keep the birds fed and this has implied efforts not only on a personal level but also on his family, efforts that in times of a pandemic would scare even the bravest. Fortunately, César remains strong fighting for his ideal, accompanied by his parents, his wife and his precious daughter.

Unfortunately, life is not always a bowl of cherries. The pandemic has not been the only factor affecting Cesar’s efforts, but also the irresponsibility and selfishness of some. In October 2020, some species that used to visit the garden were lost -such as the Bearded Mountaineer-, due to a forest fire that endangered the Mantanay Reserve itself. In Cusco, it is customary to prepare the land (for the planting season) by burning the weeds that grow during the dry season and using the ashes to fertilize the land, but by negligence the fire is sometimes left alive and is dragged by the wind beyond the farmland into the wilderness, which, if not controlled in time, creates catastrophes.

Existen lugares que tienen cierta magia, lugares a los que llegas y empiezan a drenar cualquier mala vibra que lleves puesta. Pequeños oasis de paz y renovación.

Lugares como estos son difíciles de hallar, mi favorito está cerca de la ciudad de Cusco, es Ensifera Camp -antes Cotinga Camp-. Este pequeño edén es el resultado de la visión de conservación y difusión de César Cusihuaman Caviedes y está ubicado en la quebrada de Mantanay, sector Pukara de Yanahuara en el distrito de Urubamba.

La idea original de César, que estudió las carreras de administración y cocina, era tener un jardín privado para dedicarlo a su fotografía. Esta idea la había venido madurando a lo largo de su trayectoria laboral en diversos hoteles, restaurantes y en la selva peruana. Sin embargo, y afortunadamente para todos nosotros, algunos amigos lo convencieron de abrir este jardín al público.

El jardín comienza a tomar forma en marzo 2019 y, ya que César había dejado de trabajar, empieza con la intención de poner una zona de camping, aprovechando un terreno de sus padres al pie del área de conservación privada de Mantanay. El terreno tenía andenes rústicos, pero no tenía flores aún, por lo que César, aprovechando el haber vivido siempre en esa zona, hizo un sondeo de los alrededores y empieza el trabajo de reforestar y atraer a la mayor cantidad de especies hacia el jardín naciente.

El jardín requiere de un trabajo constante y César ha visto qué plantas se han adaptado mejor al terreno a lo largo de diferentes estaciones, siendo todas especies reforestadas nativas. Por ejemplo, el jardín tiene ahora ya ocho variedades de la flor de la cantuta o Qantu. Para lograr que la mayor cantidad de flores crezca en el jardín, César aprovecha la estación de lluvias (noviembre a marzo) para plantarlas.

El futuro que ha visualizado César para el jardín es orientarlo para atraer a fotógrafos y videógrafos, así como generar alimentos para su familia y sus vecinos, para lo cual cultiva también en el jardín y ha empezado con la crianza de trucha. Para lograr estas metas, ha dejado el trabajo (externo) para abocar todos sus recursos al jardín, utilizando también sus ahorros para mantener el alimento de las aves y esto ha implicado esfuerzos no solo a nivel personal, sino a nivel familiar, esfuerzos que, en tiempo de pandemia, asustarían incluso al más valiente. Afortunadamente, César permanece fuerte luchando por su ideal, acompañado de sus padres, su señora y su preciosa hija.

Jardín y hide

Lamentablemente, no siempre es todo color rosa, no solo la pandemia ha afectado los esfuerzos de César, sino que también lo ha hecho la irresponsabilidad y el egoísmo de algunos. En octubre 2020, se perdieron algunas especies que visitaban el jardín -como el Montañez barbudo-, por culpa de un incendio forestal que puso en peligro la misma Reserva de Mantanay. En Cusco, se estila preparar la tierra para la temporada de siembra quemando la maleza que crece durante la estación seca y usando las cenizas como parte del abono para la temporada de siembra, pero por negligencia se deja el fuego vivo que es arrastrado por el viento más allá de los campos de cultivo hacia las zonas salvajes, lo que, si no se controla a tiempo, genera catástrofes.
